The Untappd Menu Scanner is a web application developed as part of a school project at Fontys University of Applied Sciences. The goal was to make choosing specialty beers easier by helping users discover new beers that match their personal taste preferences.
The application allows users to scan a beer menu using their smartphone camera and uses text recognition (OCR) to identify the available beers. By comparing these beers with a simulated Untappd database, the app shows which beers users have already tried and provides personalized recommendations based on their taste profile.
Throughout the project, I focused on user-centered design, prototyping, and usability testing. By testing different interface concepts with real users and incorporating their feedback, I developed an improved prototype with personalized taste profiles, real-time beer matching, and an interactive beer discovery experience.
Untappd Menu Scanner — Showcase
This showcase demonstrates the final version of the Untappd Menu Scanner, an interactive prototype designed to make discovering specialty beers easier and more personalized.
The application allows users to explore beers from a scanned menu through two different interfaces: a smart filterable list and a Tinder-style swipe feature. Each beer is compared against a simulated Untappd database to highlight new discoveries, previous check-ins, and personalized match scores.
Users can also customize their taste profile by selecting preferred beer styles and alcohol percentages. Based on these preferences, the application automatically recalculates the match scores of all 30 beers in real time, helping users find beers that suit their taste.
This version was developed based on feedback from usability tests with real users. The showcase highlights how user feedback was translated into a more intuitive interface, clearer recommendations, and an improved overall user experience.
